12 March 2008

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Gaelic Committee met today with the Director of Seirbheis nam Meadhanan Gàidhlig and with the Chairman and Chief Executive of Bòrd na Gàidhlig.

The Comataidh welcomed the opportunity to discuss the future development of Gaelic related activities within the Western Isles and other developments nationally.  At a reception hosted by the Comhairle, Convener Alex MacDonald said,

“I am delighted that we have had this opportunity to discuss matters of importance to the Gaelic community at this crucial time for the language.  Comhairle nan Eilean Siar will continue to work constructively with Bòrd na Gàidhlig and Seirbheis nam Meadhanan Gàidhlig and other Gaelic organisations to maintain the momentum of recent years in relation to language revitalisation.”

The Comataidh also welcomed the news of a proposal by The Highland Council to set up a Gaelic Translation Unit, as this will enhance the national provision in line with the Comhairle’s Gaelic Integrated Services, which include translation.
