National Plan for Gaelic
Bòrd na Gàidhlig is responsible, under Section 2 of the Gaelic Act, for the preparation of a National Plan for Gaelic. The National Plan for Gaelic gives a strategic overview for the advancement of Gaelic and its culture in Scotland, and it is expected that public and private organisations, and the people of Scotland will play a key role in meeting this aim. Each National Plan will last five years, following public consultation and agreement from the Scottish Ministers.
The Consultation
The Act requires that a 3 month public consultation must be carried out when the National Plan is being devised. Bòrd na Gàidhlig must consult the Scottish Parliament and publish a draft of the plan, and any opinions submitted concerning the draft during the consultation period must be taken into account. Another draft, which may contain alterations, is then presented to the Scottish Ministers and they can accept the draft or make recommendations. When there is agreement between Bòrd na Gàidhlig and the Scottish Ministers the National Plan for Gaelic is published.
