Translation, Simultaneous Interpretation & Tutors

Translation

The best way, if possible, is to write your material in Gaelic in the first instance if it is going to appear in Gaelic; but Bòrd na Gàidhlig knows that often some organisations require translation in order to distribute publications and information bilingually.

If you require translation, you should employ a professional who has demonstrated their abilities, because translation is a specialised skill and an organisation would not wish mistakes to appear in their published materials. Bòrd na Gàidhlig recommends that in general the guidelines of GOC 2 (Gaelic Orthographic Conventions 2005) should be followed; we are also striving to encourage best practice in this sector. We expect there to be specific accreditation in time which will indicate people’s capabilities. The cultural services organisation Fosglan, who are based at Lews Castle College in Lewis, is currently working in partnership with Bòrd na Gàidhlig to deliver this scheme. They are also compiling a list of translators.

Simultaneous Interpretation

Due to the increase in the use of Gaelic in organisations, there is more demand for simultaneous interpretation. Again this is a special skill, and Bòrd na Gàidhlig and Fosglan have been working together to create a list of capable translators which organisations can consult. Comunn na Gàidhlig have simultaneous interpretation equipment which they make available for meetings and other events which are in Gaelic or bilingual.

Simultaneous interpretation ensures that both languages are given equal status at meetings and events, and it ensures that there is access to Gaelic in every sphere of public life.

Tutors

Some organisations, or employees and members of organisations, require Gaelic tutors as they wish to learn Gaelic. Opportunities to learn Gaelic as an adult can be seen under Adult and Lifelong Learning, and under the Gaelic Education section. Below is a list of useful links with regard to learning Gaelic:
