Colmcille COLMCILLE PROMOTES GAELIC AND LANGUAGE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Speakers of Scottish Gaelic who wish to learn Irish Gaelic and speakers of Irish Gaelic who wish to learn Scottish Gaelic are being offered the chance to share in each other’s linguistic heritage through a series of summer courses in Skye and Islay this summer.

CAMANACHD ASSOCIATION LAUNCH GAELIC SHINTY RESOURCES

The Camanachd Association, the governing body for shinty, has produced, in partnership with Bòrd na Gàidhlig, a set of Gaelic Coaching Cards and a bilingual shinty information leaflet.

GAELIC INITIATIVES BEING ESTABLISHED ACROSS SCOTLAND

Public meetings are to be held to discuss the way forward for the network of Gaelic Language Initiatives being established throughout Scotland by Comunn na Gàidhlig, with support from Bòrd na Gàidhlig and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

SUPPORT FROM MG ALBA AND SCOTTISH LEAGUE FOR CUACH NA CLOINNE

Comunn na Gàidhlig (CnaG) is delighted to announce that MG ALBA is to support its efforts in the promotion and development of Gaelic at community level through its involvement in the CnaG National Schools Football competition 2009. The competition has also been welcomed by the Scottish Football League who organise the ALBA Challenge Cup and which is sponsored by MG ALBA.

Highlands and Islands Enterprise/Iomairt na Gàidhealtachd ‘s nan Eilean (HIE) today launched the organisation’s first Gaelic Plan, covering a three-year period from 2009 to 2012.

MAJOR PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION CAPTURES THE LIFE OF THE GAEL

A major photographic competition, administered by the Colmcille project, aimed at capturing the lives of speakers of Scottish or Irish Gaelic or of the life of the Scottish Gaidhealtachd/Irish Gaeltacht, has been launched by the Minister for Gaelic Michael Russell MSP.

Suaicheantas Fèisean nan G SGOIL SHAMHRAIDH DRAMA TEAM 2009 ANNOUNCED

Fèisean nan Gàidheal is delighted to announce the tutor team for Sgoil Shamhraidh Dràma 2009 which is set to take place in Portree 6 – 16 July.  The Drama Summer School is supported by the Scottish Arts Council, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Highland Council and Eden Court Theatre and is aimed at fluent Gaelic speakers in the 14 – 18 age range.

Donald Meek BÒRD NA GÀIDHLIG AND SCOTTISH ARTS COUNCIL HONOUR DONALD MEEK AND LAUNCH LITERARY AWARD

The work of one of Gaeldom’s greatest scholars and educationalists Professor Donald Meek has been recognised by Bòrd na Gàidhlig, the principal public agency responsible for developing Gaelic, and the Scottish Arts Council. Professor Meek is the first recipient of Bòrd na Gàidhlig’s “Sàr Ghàidheal” award for outstanding contributions to the language and “Duais Dhòmhnaill Meek” (The Donald Meek Literary Award) will be a significant addition to the support structures being offered to Gaelic writers.

Bòrd na Gàidhlig, the Gaelic development agency, has welcomed confirmation from the Royal Bank of Scotland that they will accept cheques written in Gaelic.

GAELIC SCHOOLS WEEK IN EDINBURGH

Almost 300 Gaelic-speaking children from around Scotland were in the capital this week for the sixth annual Gaelic Schools Week, organised by Comann nam Pàrant with support from Comunn na Gàidhlig and Feisean na Gàidheal. This year’s event had activities at the Royal Botanic gardens, National Galleries, National Museum and Our Dynamic Earth.

COMUNN NA GÀIDHLIG LAUNCHES IOMAIRT GÀIDHLIG LOCH ABAIR

Comunn na Gàidhlig has launched Iomairt Gàidhlig Loch Abair (The Lochaber Gaelic Initiative), the first in a series of community language programmes aimed at increasing the number of Gaelic speakers.  Iomairt Gàidhlig Loch Abair was launched in a packed Council chamber in Fort William at the weekend.
